Spring Catch Set and Fittings for Five Bar Style Gates
Spring Catch Set
A Spring catch can be used on five bar field gates hung between or behind the posts. This style of catch needs to be set up fairly precisely, or it will not function properly. This is especially true when the gate is hung between the posts and using a central closing plate. Please look at our post - Field Gate Hanging Measurements Infographic, which will give you an idea of the clearances needed.
There are three options for the catch that goes on the post.
Double-Leg staple Catch
This catch is what the sprung bar latches into on spring catch sets fitted to gates hung and shut onto the back of the posts.
Single-Leg staple Catch
This catch is what the sprung bar latches into on spring catch sets fitted to gates hung and shut onto the back of the posts. However, as it only has one leg, it is slightly less stable than the double leg version and more prone to becoming loose after prolonged use.
Central Closing Plate
The central closing plate is used when the spring catch is fitted between posts. It allows the gate to open both ways. The plate has an indent in the centre into which the sprung bar latches, holding the gate in the closed position. A note of caution-If the gate is closed too quickly (particularly after the catch has been fitted for a while), the vertical sprung bar can skip over the indent and allow the gate to swing open on the other side of the posts.
